Psychology is a term that many of us are familiar with. We encounter it in the media—movies, TV shows, books, and even fictional stories. But how many of us are aware of applied psychology? I'll admit, I hadn’t heard of it until I began studying this field during my postgraduate studies.


As requested by the Department of Psychology at Nepa University, Birkbeck, I will provide an overview of the diverse world of psychology, with a particular focus on the distinct subfield of organizational psychology.


What is Applied Psychology?


Applied psychology is the use of psychological principles, theories, and techniques to solve real-world problems. It aims to apply psychological knowledge to improve various aspects of human behavior and decision-making in practical settings.

Some of the most well-known subfields of applied psychology include:


  1. Sports Psychology

  2. Educational Psychology

  3. Organizational Psychology


What is Organizational Psychology?


Also known as industrial psychology or I-O psychology, organizational psychology is the scientific study of human behavior in the workplace. This field examines how people interact with each other in professional settings and how these interactions can be improved to create a more productive, supportive work environment.


Key Areas of Organizational Psychology


Organizational psychology focuses on several key areas, including:

  1. Job satisfaction and well-being

  2. Recruitment and employee selection

  3. Employee performance and motivation

  4. Communication and collaboration among staff

  5. Leadership and organizational culture


Ultimately, organizational psychology uses a scientific approach to enhance the workplace experience by applying evidence-based practices that improve both individual and organizational outcomes.


Final Thoughts


In conclusion, organizational psychology plays a crucial role in improving work environments, ensuring that employees are engaged, productive, and satisfied with their roles.
